President & President-Elect: Christina Smolke
smolke@cheme.caltech.edu

Christina brings enthusiasm, energy as well as insight into emerging areas of biological engineering, and a strong commitment to transforming educational programs to the positions of President and President-elect. She is committed to effectively training the next generation of biological engineers and has worked to expand the biological engineering community that IBE reaches.

Over the next two years Christina plans to focus her efforts working with the IBE community and leadership in the following areas:

  1. to present a cohesive intellectual framework and agenda for the discipline and IBE with the goal of building a community of biological engineers that identifies with each other and the organization;
  2. to work with the community to identify best practices, an intellectual agenda, and educational curriculum that will help solidify the discipline and provide a framework in which we can most effectively train biological engineers;
  3. to expand community membership from both industry and academia under a cohesive vision; and
  4. to continue to expand services for the community including student activities and awards.
Christina holds a faculty position within the Chemical Engineering Department at Caltech. Her research program at Caltech focus on developing platform technologies for the construction of nucleic acid-based sensors and switches and examining the application of these engineered molecules in areas such as programmed cellular behavior, 'intelligent' therapeutics, metabolic engineering, and nanosensor devices.

Past President: Tom Richard
trichard@psu.edu

As Past-president Tom brings valuable insight and expertise to the IBE Executive Committee. He has served on the council as Treasurer, President and now Past-president. During his terms, Tom has been instrumental in the development and growth of IBE.

Tom is a faculty member with the College Agriculture and Biological Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. He advises a Bioconversion Research Group which applies fundamental engineering science to microbial ecosystems, developing innovative strategies for a more sustainable agriculture and the emerging bio-based economy. Tom's current research themes include solid-state fermentation of biomass for renewable chemicals and fuels, advanced compost engineering and sustainable crop and livestock systems.

Secretary: David Jones
djones1@unl.edu

David Jones is a charter member of IBE and has served as Secretary for the past 4 years. He has chaired the Recognition and Awards Committee that has implemented the IBE Brahm and Sudha Verma Lifetime Visionary Award and the recognition of IBE Fellows

David is a professor in the Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was instrumental in designing and implementing the Biological System Engineering curriculum at UNL and teaches at all levels of engineering curriculum. He serves as an ABET Program Evaluator and leads the assessment activities in his home department. His research activities are in area of mathematical modeling of biological systems. His contributions have been in the description and accommodation of ambiguity and imperfect information in the modeling of complex systems through the use of fuzzy set theory and other soft computing techniques. His work has been applied to the areas of thermo-chemical processes, physiological responses, risk assessment, and control system design.

Treasurer: Czarena "Czar" Crofcheck
ccrofche@bae.uky.edu

Czar joins the Executive Council as Treasurer after serving as a Councilor at Large for the past two years. She has been a member of IBE since 2001 and her long-term involvement with IBE will be beneficial to the financial stability of the association. During her involvement with IBE, she has judged the IBE Bioethics Essay and Student Poster Competition as well as organized the Student Poster Competition for the 2006 meeting in Tucson, AZ.  In 2007, she was the Program Chair for the annual meeting in St. Louis, MO.  She believes in the mission of IBE and wants to be a part of the continued growth and development of the organization.

Downstream processing and biomass conversion are Czar's research concentrations at the University of Kentucky where she holds a faculty position in the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department. Czar holds a number of advisory roles and teaches multiple classes in the department.
