2018 Keynote Speaker

Michael (Mike) Domach
Professor of Chemical Engineering
Carnegie Mellon University

Professor Michael Domach will deliver the keynote address at the 2018 IBE Annual Conference on April 6 at the Norfolk Waterfront Marriott, Norfolk, VA.

His opening address at the Conference on the topic of Biological Engineering Education - Evolution, Present and the Future will speak to the objectives of the Forum on Convergence and Biological Engineering Education.

Professor received B.S. in Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering and Chemistry minors from the University of Massachusetts, and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. He studies fundamental and applied aspects of cell engineering and biology to understand the behavior of cells, biochemical reaction and control mechanisms. A key component of his research work is that it couples experimental investigation to mathematical model development. He has authored numerous award-winning research publications.

Professor Domach is committed to education and has authored a textbook entitled, “Introduction to Biomedical Engineering”, 2nd edition, Prentice Hall.

Professor Domach has received numerous awards. He was recipient of a Presidential Young Investigator Award; Inaugural Dow Chair, Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina; Senior Visiting Scientist, Bioinformatics, The Jackson Lab, Bar Harbor, ME; and Co-Director of NIH Training Program in Biotechnology. He is a co-founder of Automated Cell Technologies Inc, a NIST-ATP funded company. He is on the Editorial Board of the J. Biotechnology and Editor in Chief of Biotechnology Progress. Professor Domach is a Fellow of the American Institute of Biological and Medical Engineers.

The IBE Annual Conference is a gathering of the world’s leading researchers and educators in biological engineering, who share a passion for building a better future.

The theme of the 2018 Annual Conference is Convergence and Biological Engineering that will include technical sessions in key areas such as biomaterials, bioenergy, biosensors, nanotechnology, and much more. Incorporated into the Conference is a two-day Forum to exchange ideas and to re-imagine “Advances in TransDisciplinary Approaches for Engineering Education”.

The intimate setting and diverse makeup of the Conference are catalysts for multidisciplinary interactions with attendees who actively participate in shaping the biological engineering profession.

Undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral associates are encouraged to attend. The Conference is an excellent opportunity to develop professional skills and network with peers and professionals in the industry through activities such as poster sessions, bioethics essay competition and social activities.

General Poster Session and Student Poster Session and Competition
Poster session presentations covering any topic within biological engineering are invited. A special poster session for student research projects or engineering design projects will be included within the poster session. The top three Undergraduate Student Posters and top three Graduate Student Posters will receive cash awards and certificates of merit.

About the Forum: Convergence and Biological Engineering Education

Advances in TransDisciplinary Approaches for Biological Engineering Education

IBE has organized a two-day forum as a part of its 2018 Annual Conference on April 6-7, 2018. The forum will be open to all IBE Conference participants who have paid full conference registration fee. A single-day registration will also be available by paying for one-day Conference registration fee.

The primary goal of the forum is to re-image and produce a forward path with impactful actions for biological engineering education. The forum will bring together leading educators, researchers and practitioners, and industry and government agency representatives to:
  1. Examine the philosophy, evolution, core competencies and best practices of the current undergraduate programs;
  2. Explore best practices in graduate and postdoctoral training and internship experiences of biological engineers to frame complex emerging real-world problems, e.g., indeterminate forms for open, multi-variable food-health-energy-water systems through convergence;
  3. Identify unmet needs of BE stakeholders and employers of BE graduates, i.e., industry, state and federal regulators, vis a vis, emerging developments of smart systems, e.g., involving sensor fusion, UAVs, CRISPR; and
  4. Assess potentials of professional societies creating network structures and culture facilitating intentional efforts for promoting convergence in the education of biological engineers.
Why this forum now?
As a whole, the incorporation of biology and biological principles into undergraduate and graduate curricula has been relatively slow and insular. In contrast, the practice of biological engineering has largely outpaced curricular reform. We believe that all “bio-“engineering curricula in the US evolved independently from the motivation for addressing problems of food, environmental or human health systems. While they offer transdisciplinary integration of biology, however, they lack a shared perspective that would define core character, content and competencies informed by broader concepts and practice of biological engineering.

The Forum Program
The forum will include keynote and lead presentations by leading educators from foreign and U.S academic institutions, industry, government agency and students. A limited number of abstracts will be accepted based on the content and relevance to the forum objectives. Student presentations are highly encouraged and abstracts authored by students will receive preference to include their perspectives. Breakout sessions towards the end of the second day will be devoted to identifying future needs and action plan.
