Biological Engineer Jim Dooley
A Leader in the Field
James H. Dooley, PhD, PE
Dr. James H. (Jim) Dooley is President and CEO of Silverbrook Limited, a product development and business incubation services company in Federal Way, WA. Silverbrook specializes in the commercialization of new technologies at the intersection of biology, engineering and enterprise. Dr. Dooley is also Executive Manager of Forest Concepts, LLC. Forest Concepts specializes in product and market development to utilize small-diameter timber and support sustainable forest communities. Dr. Dooley previously held a number of engineering, technical management and business development positions with major corporations, including Weyerhaeuser and Amfac, during a twenty-year career in the agriculture, horticulture and forest industries.
Dr. Dooley holds engineering degrees from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Univ. of California at Davis and the University of Washington. He is a registered professional engineer in Washington and Hawaii, first achieving registration in 1976. Dooley has been awarded five United States Patents. Jim Dooley is one of the few individuals who have worked across the full spectrum of biological engineering from micropropagation to watershed and ecological systems engineering. While with Amfac in Hawaii and with Weyerhaeuser Company in Washington, he worked with biologists to develop engineering sciences related to plant tissue culture for papaya fruit, horticultural plants and forest trees. His contributions included a better understanding of spectral transmission of light energy through tissue culture vessels. He conducted early work on the manipulation of light spectra to enhance the physiological stages of plant propagation in-vitro.
The majority of Dooley's career has been focused on the application of biological engineering methods to agriculture, forest and horticulture production operations. More recently, Dr. Dooley turned his attention to design and development of habitat enhancement materials for threatened and endangered species, including the pileated woodpecker, spotted owls, Western pond turtles, salmon and others. The Forest Concepts company was formed by Dooley and a set of investors to commercialize habitat and watershed restoration technologies that are based on sound biological sciences and disciplined engineering.
Jim served as the Year 2000 President of the Institute of Biological Engineering. He is a Fellow of ASAE, the Society for Engineering in Agricultural, Food, and Biological Systems. Dooley is a member of the Society of American Foresters, Forest Products Society and the Licensing Executive Society. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of ABET, the accreditation board for applied science, computing, engineering and technology education.
