Model Bylaws

The Bylaws provided here were prepared to be used primarily as a guide for developing Bylaws specific to your University Chapter and within the expectation of the national IBE.

Institute of Biological Engineering, Name of University Chapter

Article I - Name and Objectives

Section 1: The name of this organization is the Institute of Biological Engineering, Name of Institution Chapter and is located at Name and Address of Institution.

Section 2: The objective of this Chapter is to promote the interests of the members involved in the study or practice of biological engineering, particularly as these interests relate to their professional development and to the national organization, IBE.

Section 3: These Bylaws, and any rules adopted by this Chapter, will not conflict with the rules, regulations, and policies of IBE in regards to its university chapters.

Article II - Membership

Section 1: Members may include individuals who have an interest in biological engineering and who come from any discipline, program, or department of Name of Institution.

Section 2: Members of the Chapter who are guilty of conduct unbecoming of a member may be expelled from the Chapter by two-thirds vote of the members of the Chapter present and voting at a regular or special business meeting. This vote can only take place after the accused has had the opportunity to defend himself or herself, either orally or in writing.

Article III - Officers

Section 1: The officers of the Chapter that can exist are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Faculty Advisor. Other officers as needed may be appointed with the approval of the national IBE. Officers will be elected Specify a time when new officers will be elected.

Section 2: The President will preside at all meetings when present; will appoint all committees that that are authorized by vote of the Chapter at any business meeting; and will assume active leadership of the Chapter and perform other customary duties of the office.

Section 3: The Vice President will preside in the absence of the President and assist in official duties.

Section 4: The Secretary will record the minutes of every meeting and report the previous meeting's minutes; will prepare a quarterly report of the Chapter activities and news for the national IBE; will prepare all necessary documentation required for campus and other publications.

Section 5: The Treasurer will collect and receive all dues, fees, and other monies due the Chapter; will properly care for such monies and upon proper authorization disperse them to meet obligations of the Chapter; will keep suitable financial records and accounts of all such monies, and records will be subject to the rules of Name of Institution governing student organizations.

Section 6: The Faculty Advisor is the official representative between the Chapter and the Name of Institution; will counsel with officers, members, and committees of the Chapter and assist toward achieving excellence within the organization; and will be a member of IBE.

Section 7: All officers of the Chapter will be members.

Section 8: The officers of the Chapter will comprise the Executive Committee. Two-thirds of the officers will constitute a quorum for the transaction of any business that does not require action by the Chapter.

Section 9: Any officer who is guilty of conduct unbecoming of the office may be removed by two-thirds vote of the members of the Chapter present and voting at a regular or special business meeting. This can only take place after specific charges have been filed and investigated by the Executive Committee.

Article IV-Meetings

Section 1: The Chapter will hold regular meetings during the school year to conduct business and other related programs and presentations.

Section 2: The Executive Committee will have the power to postpone regular meetings and/or hold special meetings when it serves the best interests of the Chapter.

Article V-Reports

Section 1: The Chapter will submit a quarterly report that includes brief descriptions of recent Chapter activities and events by the 15th of January, April, June, and September of each year to the national IBE. The Chapter will submit an annual report by June 1st of each year that describes current membership, attendance, officers, financial status, and significant events to the national IBE.

Section 2: These Bylaws will become effective upon acceptance by two-thirds vote of the members present at any regular or special meeting called for that purpose.

These Bylaws have been Adopted by the Institute of Biological Engineering, Name of Institution Chapter.
